SWIMSAFER STAGE 1

Introduction to Water Skills

The objective is develop confidence and independence in the water, learn general and deep-end water safety. Techniques taught include the forward and backward movement, safe entry and exit and personal water safety.

Entries & Exits 

1) Enter the water safely and confidently with slide-In entry and exit using ladder and from pool edge.

Sculling & Body Orientation 

1) Recover from a face down float or glide to a standing position
2) Recover from a back float or glide to a standing position Introduction to Floatation
3) Survival Technique SwimSafer

Underwater skills 

1) Submerge in waist depth water, open eyes and blow bubbles.

Movement / Swimming / Strokes Swim  

1)Any stroke Forward movement 10 m
2)Intro to Backward movement 5m

Survival & Activity skills 

1) Support body in an upright position and signal distress.
2)Grasp a flotation aid thrown for support Be pulled to safety
3) Wearing clothing, correctly fit a PFD, jump into the water, float for 30 seconds and then climb out of deep water.

SwimSafer Stage 1 Knowledge Objective: 

Rules of behaviour in, on, near the water. Water safety knowledge at a swimming pool.

1) Before going into the pool Q: Should you ever go swimming alone?
    A: No 

2) Before going into the pool Q: Who should you go swimming with?
    A: An adult. Examples: Your Mummy, Daddy, Granny, Grandpa 

3) In the water Q: How can you get in and out of the pool safely?
    A: Using the stair / ladder and slide in by the deck. 

4) In the water Q: What are the water safety rules at the pool?
     A: No running, pulling or pushing. Do not stay in the water during heavy rain with lighting. 

5) Danger in the water Q: When you are into trouble in the water, what should you do?
    A: Shout and wave for help if possible, try float on your back and relax till help arrive. 

6) Danger in the water Q: What should you do when you see another child having trouble in the water?
A: Shout for help and try to get an adult to help. Do not attempt to help on your own.
