Straddle jump (stride jump)
When –
lifesaver needs to watch a person in difficulty and entry is to be made from a
low height into known deep water. This technique must not be performed into
shallow water or unknown conditions as an injury to the swimmer may occur.
Why – An
effective straddle jump enables the rescuer to get into the water quickly and
by keeping his head above water, he is able to maintain observation of the
casualty.
How –
● step out from a standing
position, aiming for distance
● extend one leg forward and the
other leg backward, slightly bent at the knees
● lean forward
● extend the arms sideways and
slightly forward with the elbows slightly bent and the palms down
● hold the head erect, watching
the person in difficulty
● on the entering the water,
press down with the arms and scissor the legs to keep the head above water
